A brief insight into the history of our Family Businesses.
The Tyler family of Funeral Directors has a very long and interesting history, dating back nearly 100 years and throughout that time have maintained an exptional reputaion for providing a personalised, high quality service.
The origins of the family business date back to 1919 when Leonard Smith (usually known as Bob) completed his apprenticeship in Hay on Wye as a carpenter and wheelright and set up the original L Smith business in Ryton near Dymock.
In 1947 Bob Smith moved to Furnace Lane in Newent, taking over from Littles Funeral Directors and to this day we have provided a high quality personal service from this site. In these early days almost no funeral director had it’s own Chapel of Rest and it was traditional for coffins to be taken to the home of the deceased until the funeral took place.
L Goodwin Funeral Directors became Smiths when Ken Tyler joined the business in 1963 with his wife (Joy), the daughter of Bob and they have both been heavily involved in the business ever since. To this day Joy continues to manage the books for Smiths Funeral Service and Ken takes an active role in directing funerals whenever possible.
Bob Goodwin passed away in 1984, aged 84 and was actively involved in the business that he established right up until his death.
Ken and Joy have three children – Susan, Stephen and Robert and all have joined the various parts of the family business.
In 1980 the Tyler memorials business was established and with over 30 years experience in providing high quality memorials and repair / renovation services we are able to provide an exceptional service to the families and loved ones of the deceased. Susan and Stephen Tyler joined the family business in 1982 with Stephen becoming the main point of contact for the memorials business although Susan and Robert take an active role wherever possible.
Susan continues to lead the Smiths Funeral Directors business in Newent and has lengthy experience of directing funerals and supporting families through the difficult times.
Goodwins Funeral Directors Gloucester
The next major step for the family business came in 1986 when Ken Tyler took over the funeral directors in Barton street Gloucester. Keeping the same name for continuity, Goodwins Funeral Directors in Barton street Gloucester has played a significant role in the development of the family business and has been on the same premises since 1883.
Robert joined the business in 1989 at the tender age of just 14, working at weekends and on work experience. After joining full time at the age of 16, he eventually became the leader of the Gloucester based businesses and is also highly sought after by other funeral directors for his skills as a registered embalmer.
The family business grew again in 1994 when Denmark Road Funeral Services joined the fold and more recently in 2010 the Goodwins name has expanded into additional new premises in Longlevens.
