Our history
The Tyler family of funeral directors holds a long and distinguished history in Gloucestershire, dating back nearly 100 years. Throughout this time, we have maintained an exceptional reputation for providing a deeply personalised, high-quality service.
Our origins
The roots of our family business trace back to 1919, when Leonard ‘Bob’ Smith completed his apprenticeship as a carpenter and wheelwright and established the original L. Smith business in Ryton. In 1947, Bob moved the firm to Furnace Lane in Newent, where we are proud to still operate from today, upholding the same traditions of excellence that Bob established.
A growing family legacy
In 1963 Ken Tyler married Joy (Bob’s daughter) and subsequently joined the business.
The legacy continues through their children Sue, Stephen and Robert
In the late 1980 Smiths took over Goodwins in Gloucester and now has offices in Peter Scott House London road and Longlevens.
